Who was Bhattadev?

  • Bhattadev (16th–17th century) is regarded as the father of Assamese prose literature.
  • He was a devoted disciple of Mahapurush Srimanta Damodar Dev, a key figure of the Ekasarana Vaishnavite and Satra tradition in Assam.
  • His prose writings marked a shift from verse-dominated religious texts to structured, accessible prose, laying the foundation for modern Assamese literature.
  • His works are also noted for early advocacy of social justice and women’s dignity, making him relevant beyond literature.
