A new Nature Climate Change study shows that global warming is increasing sharp day-to-day temperature fluctuations, especially in mid–low latitudes (South Asia, East Asia, Africa, South America). These swings pose rising risks to human health and agriculture.

Rising Global Climate Extremes

  • Daily temperature variation has increased by 20–50 percent in many regions.
  • Heatwaves are becoming longer and 4 times more frequent (World Meteorological Organization).
  • Heavy rainfall events have increased by ~30 percent since the 1950s.

Causes, Concerns and Way Ahead

Causes

Concerns

Way Ahead

Higher greenhouse gases Crop stress, heat mortality Strengthen early warning systems
Jet-stream instability Energy and water demand spikes Urban heat action plans
Ocean warming Extreme rainfall and floods Faster mitigation under Paris Agreement

Q. Increasing day-to-day temperature variability is mainly linked to which of the following?

  1. Jet-stream shifts
  2. Rising greenhouse gases
  3. Ocean surface warming

Select the correct answer:
A. 1 and 2 only,  B. 2 and 3 only,
