The Tea Research Association (TRA) launched TocklAI, an artificial intelligence model designed specifically for the tea industry, at its 62nd Annual General Meeting in Kolkata in October 2026. The project draws on the research archive of the Tocklai Tea Research Institute in Jorhat, Assam, a 115-year-old tea research institution.

Key Features and Objectives

  • TocklAI is a small language model that uses retrieval-augmented generation, meaning it retrieves information from verified research documents before generating answers.
    • This helps provide tea-specific advice grounded in scientific evidence.
  • Planters, managers and small tea growers can use it for guidance on pest and disease management, soil nutrition, tea clones, replanting, climate adaptation, processing and food safety.
  • More than 2,000 scientific publications have already been digitised, with further digitisation planned over 18 months.
  • The project is led by TRA Secretary Joydeep Phukan, with contributions from Tocklai scientists, the Tea Board of India and Dr Vishal Misra of Columbia University.
  • The initiative aims to make scientific knowledge more accessible to small tea growers, who produce more than half of India’s tea but often have limited access to research-based advice.

Other Important Tea Industry Developments

  • Climate-resilient clone TV 36: TRA released a tea clone that showed comparatively low effects from climatic variation during breeding while retaining good yield potential.
  • Nano fertilisers: The Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited and TRA reported yield gains of 8–14 per cent in four years of joint trials.
    • The products are set to enter TRA’s Package of Practices.
  • Export and food-safety challenges: The industry faces changing international pesticide regulations and shipping disruptions, making traceability, regulatory compliance and quality control increasingly important.

Institutions and Policy Linkages

  • The Tea Research Association, a scientific research organisation, conducts research and develops technologies for the tea industry.
  • The Tea Board of India, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, supports tea development, quality improvement and export promotion.
  • The National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture provides a broader policy framework for climate-resilient agricultural practices.

Exam Hook: Key Takeaway

TocklAI connects Assam’s long-standing tea research with artificial intelligence, potentially improving scientific advice, small-grower access, climate adaptation and quality management.

Prelims Practice Question

Consider the following statements about TocklAI:

  1. It draws on research from the Tocklai Tea Research Institute in Jorhat.
  2. It uses retrieval-augmented generation to provide research-based answers.
  3. It was developed specifically for the tea industry.

Which of the statements given above are correct?

A. Only 1 and 2

B. Only 2 and 3

C. Only 1 and 3

D. 1, 2 and 3

Answer: D. 1, 2 and 3

One-line wrap: TocklAI demonstrates how artificial intelligence can translate decades of agricultural research into practical guidance for tea growers and industry professionals.
