SLINEX-26

The 13th edition of the Sri Lanka–India bilateral maritime exercise, SLINEX-26, is being conducted at Visakhapatnam.

What is SLINEX?

  • SLINEX, conceptualised in 2005, is a bilateral naval exercise between India and Sri Lanka
  • Over the years, it has evolved into an important platform for exchanging best practices and improving the ability of the two navies to operate together.
  •  The exercise aims to strengthen maritime cooperation, improve interoperability and deepen mutual understanding between the two navies.
  • The exercise is conducted in two phases:
    • The Harbour Phase includes professional interactions, cross-deck visits, sharing of best practices, yoga, sports and cultural activities.
      • The harbour phase is being conducted under the Eastern Naval Command.
    • The Sea Phase focuses on coordinated activities at sea to improve operational synergy and interoperability.
  • The Indian Navy is represented by INS Kavaratti, an indigenous anti-submarine warfare corvette, and INS Jyoti, a fleet tanker. SLNS Sindurala represents the Sri Lankan Navy.
  • The objectives of SLINEX are as follows:
    • The exercise strengthens interoperability, meaning the ability of different military forces to work together effectively.
    • It promotes professional exchanges and best-practice sharing between the two navies.
    • It contributes to a secure, stable and inclusive maritime environment.
    • It supports India’s broader vision of MAHASAGAR – Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.
