Jagiroad Semiconductor Plant Begins Trial Runs

Tata Electronics’ ₹27,000-crore semiconductor facility at Jagiroad in Morigaon district, Assam, has entered trial production, marking an important step towards establishing the State as a semiconductor manufacturing hub.

• The facility is being developed as a major Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test facility, with commercial operations expected to begin around December–January. 
• The plant is designed for a capacity of 48 million chips per day.

What will the Jagiroad facility do?

A semiconductor fabrication plant manufactures electronic circuits on silicon wafers, whereas an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test facility performs crucial post-fabrication activities such as packaging, assembly and testing.

The Jagiroad facility will use technologies including Wire Bond, Flip Chip and Integrated Systems Packaging. Its products are intended for sectors such as automobiles, electric vehicles, telecommunications, consumer electronics and artificial intelligence.

• The project is expected to generate more than 27,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, creating jobs ranging from technical and clean-room workers to engineers and research professionals.
• The facility can also attract suppliers, packaging-material manufacturers, equipment companies and allied semiconductor units, helping Assam build a wider industrial ecosystem.

Government support and significance

• The project operates within the Semicon India Programme, implemented through the India Semiconductor Mission, which seeks to build an end-to-end semiconductor ecosystem covering design, fabrication, assembly, testing and packaging. The semiconductor packaging scheme provides fiscal support for eligible facilities.
• The project is therefore more than a single factory. Its larger objective is to create an electronics and semiconductor cluster in Northeast India, generate skilled employment and strengthen India’s resilience in global technology supply chains.
