Rare Himalayan Fish Recorded in India for the First Time in Arunachal Pradesh
Scientists have recorded the rare Himalayan fish Schizopygopsis waddellii in India for the first time from a natural high-altitude lake in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The specimens were collected in July 2026 from a lake at around 12,800 feet above sea level.
The discovery expands the known geographical range of the species, previously associated mainly with high-altitude freshwater systems of the Tibetan and Chinese plateaus. Its type locality is Yamdok Lake in Tibet.
About the Discovery
The fish belongs to the Cyprinidae family, the family that includes carps and several other freshwater fishes. It is adapted to the cold, oxygen-poor and harsh conditions of high-altitude aquatic ecosystems.
- The specimens were collected by scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research–Central Institute of Coldwater Fisheries Research, Bhimtal, in collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh Fisheries Department and the Shar-Tso Committee of Tawang.
- The species was identified through an integrative taxonomic approach, combining physical characteristics of the fish with mitochondrial DNA analysis.
