The Smuggled Apes:  Baby Orangutans Found in Odisha

Recently, five critically endangered baby Orangutans were found abandoned in the Balasore district. They were safely rescued and sent to the Nandankanan Zoo for medical care.
This incident exposes a dark and growing reality: India is increasingly being used as a transit route for the illegal, international “exotic pet” trade. Smugglers bring these rare animals across oceans and borders to be sold to wealthy buyers, often abandoning them to die if they fear getting caught by the police.

2 · The Smuggling Route

Step 1: The Native Home
Orangutans are Asia’s only great apes. They are naturally found only in the tropical rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra (in Indonesia and Malaysia).

Step 2: The Ocean Smuggling
Because they cannot cross oceans naturally, investigators suspect an organized syndicate smuggled these babies by sea from Malaysia into Kolkata.

Step 3: The Highway Run
The traffickers then moved the animals secretly by road via NH-16. A single baby ape is sold for an astonishing ₹20–₹25 lakh in international black markets.

Step 4: The Abandonment
Fearing forest checks or police interception, the smugglers cowardly dumped the innocent animals in a forest in Balasore and fled.
