- E-Eye works like an “electronic eye”. It uses a simple chemical reaction that produces a colored compound whose intensity is proportional to the toxicant concentration.
- Using Beer-Lambert law (an optical absorption principle), the device’s sensor measures the color intensity and converts it into a digital readout of contaminant concentration.
- It is designed for point-of-care use at water sources, and can wirelessly transmit data to water treatment facilities.
- In lab tests covering over 2,700 samples, E-Eye successfully detected multiple toxicants simultaneously.
- These toxicants include heavy metals arsenic, lead, iron, chromium, as well as fluoride and Escherichia coli bacteria.
- The device costs about ₹3,500 to build, with a per-test reagent cost of only around ₹2. This makes it affordable for widespread deployment.
