1 · What is the issue?

The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is a legendary 95-year-old institution that helped shape India’s economic planning. To prepare it for the modern era of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science, the government recently introduced the ISI Bill, 2026 to completely overhaul how the institute is run.

However, this has sparked massive protests. Teachers and experts argue that the new law will destroy the institute’s academic freedom. Instead of being run democratically by elected professors, the ISI will now be controlled by a small board entirely nominated by the Central Government.

2 · What Exactly Does the New Bill Change?

Step 1: A New Legal Identity
The ISI will stop being a simple “registered society” and will be officially converted into a powerful “statutory body corporate” governed directly by parliamentary law.
