1 · What is the news?

Today, on August 5, 2026, an old, leftover piece of a SpaceX rocket is expected to accidentally crash into the Moon. It has been floating aimlessly in space since its launch in January 2025.
While meteorites hit the Moon all the time, a human-made rocket crashing is quite rare. This event highlights two very important things: first, it gives scientists a great chance to study the Moon’s surface dust. Second, it serves as a serious warning about space junk. Right now, there are no strict global laws to stop private companies from carelessly leaving their rocket waste in space, which could one day damage important sites like India’s Chandrayaan-3 landing spot.

2 · The Crash and Its Impact

The spent upper stage of a Falcon 9 rocket drifted off into a chaotic orbit and was eventually pulled in by the Moon’s gravity.

As it strikes the surface near the Einstein Crater, the material will vaporize, creating a bright flash of light and throwing up a massive cloud of lunar dust (ejecta).

The heavy crash will permanently leave a new crater on the Moon, measuring roughly 20 to 30 meters across.
