1 · What is the news?

Imagine a massive 25-kilometer wall of mud and trenches suddenly cutting your city in half. This is happening in Gaza right now. Israel is building giant “mud walls” to permanently slice the land into two parts, trapping displaced people in crowded camps.
For the people of Gaza, this destroys the hope of ever having their own unified country.

2 · How the Land is Being Divided

Step 1: The Temporary Map
A map line (the “Yellow Line”) was drawn during peace talks to temporarily separate military zones in Gaza.
Step 2: The Earth Movers
Instead of just drawing a line on a map, bulldozers are now piling up huge mounds of dirt to make this separation physical.
Step 3: The Empty Zone
Homes and farms near these new walls are completely flattened to create an empty, heavily guarded “no man’s land.”
Step 4: The Permanent Trap
Gaza is permanently sliced into pieces. This physical division makes a future, unified Palestinian state almost impossible.

3 · Key Geopolitical Concepts

Earthen Berms
Mud Walls in Warfare
These are giant mounds of piled-up earth. They are a very cheap and fast way to build a wall against attacks and mount surveillance cameras.
India’s Official Stance
The Two-State Solution
India strongly supports a “Two-State Solution”—meaning an independent Palestine living peacefully next to Israel. Cutting Gaza in half threatens this core policy.
Geneva Convention
International Law
The Fourth Geneva Convention legally bans an occupying army from forcing civilians out of their homes. Erasing neighborhoods to build walls violates this law.
The Ethical Lesson
Breaking Unfair Fences
Our students demanding fair exams are fighting the exact same injustice: the right to progress without being fenced out by a rigged system. We must stand with them!

UPSC Prelims Quick Facts: History & Law
The Bar Lev Line A historical example! In 1968, Israel built a massive chain of similar mud walls along the Suez Canal to stop enemy attacks.
Buffer Zone An empty “no man’s land” completely cleared of houses and farms to keep enemy fighters far away from military positions.
Contiguous State For a country to truly function, its land must be contiguous (connected). Fragmenting a territory makes creating a future state physically impossible.
The Yellow Line A map line from the 2025 peace plan that initially placed 53% of eastern Gaza under military control.

MCQ Practice Question
Q. With reference to International Law and India’s foreign policy, consider the following statements:

  1. The ‘Yellow Line’ in recent geopolitical contexts refers to the demilitarized border dividing North and South Korea.
  2. The Fourth Geneva Convention strictly prohibits an occupying army from forcibly moving civilians out of their homes.
  3. India formally supports a Two-State Solution for the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
(a) 1 and 2 only    (b) 2 and 3 only    (c) 1 and 3 only    (d) 1, 2 and 3

Answer: (b) 2 and 3 only

  • Statement 1 — Incorrect (the trap): The ‘Yellow Line’ here refers to the new demarcation inside the Gaza Strip, not the Korean peninsula (which is called the DMZ).
  • Statement 2 — Correct: The Fourth Geneva Convention is a global law that protects civilians in war zones from forced displacement.
  • Statement 3 — Correct: India has consistently advocated for an independent State of Palestine living side-by-side in peace with Israel.
