1 · What is the news?

NASA has recently funded a brilliant new space mission concept called PRAXIS. For the first time in history, scientists want to physically touch and collect samples from the rings of planets like Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune to understand how our solar system was formed.

However, flying a multi-billion dollar spacecraft directly into a planetary ring is incredibly dangerous due to millions of fast-moving rocks and ice debris. To solve this, PRAXIS will not use human control from Earth. Instead, it will use an advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) brain and bio-inspired robotics to safely “graze” the rings, grab a quick sample, and test it right there in space! For India (ISRO), mastering this kind of AI-driven space technology is crucial for our future missions to Venus and Mars.

2 · How Will PRAXIS Work?

Step 1: The Ring Hazard
Planetary rings are chaotic and filled with fast-moving debris. Flying directly through them would instantly destroy the spacecraft.
Step 2: The ‘Grazing’ Technique
Instead of flying inside, the main spacecraft will safely fly just outside the edge of the rings (grazing the ring plane).
Step 3: AI Touch-and-Go
An onboard AI model will automatically identify a safe particle. A long robotic arm (boom) will shoot out, grab the sample, and quickly pull back.
Step 4: In-Situ Analysis
Without bringing the sample back to Earth, onboard instruments will instantly analyze its size, porosity, and chemical makeup deep in space.
