1 · What happened

On the evening of 24 June 2026, disaster struck Venezuela’s Caribbean coast. Two massive earthquakes—a 7.2 followed by a 7.5—hit just 40 seconds apart. Their epicentres were only 5 km apart near the town of Morón, roughly 160 km west of the capital, Caracas.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) calls this a rare “doublet earthquake.” Tragically, the destruction is massive. Officials confirm 188 dead, 1,520 injured, and 157 missing. Over 200 people remain trapped under 250 collapsed buildings.

2 · Understanding the ‘Doublet’ Earthquake

Normally, a big earthquake is followed by smaller aftershocks. But in a doublet earthquake, two massive quakes of almost the same size hit the exact same area within seconds or minutes. It is a terrifying double-blow.
  • The earthquake was caused by intense tectonic grinding between the Caribbean and South American plates, which slide past each other at 20mm per year.
  • The shallow, 10km-deep rupture occurred along the Boconó-San Sebastián fault system, where a magnitude 7.2 shock instantly overloaded an adjacent segment, triggering the 7.5 mainshock 39 seconds later.

How it works
Two Faults Snapping
The first quake breaks a fault line, immediately causing huge stress on a nearby fault line. Seconds later, the second one breaks too, releasing double the destructive energy.
Why so destructive
Shallow Quakes, Soft Soil
Both quakes happened very close to the surface, causing violent shaking. The Caracas region is built on soft soil that magnifies the tremors, completely destroying buildings and shutting down the main airport.
Aftershock risk
138 Tremors and Counting
The USGS has recorded over 138 aftershocks. There is a 40% chance of another magnitude 6+ quake hitting within a week. The USGS warns the death toll could sadly climb into the thousands.
India responds
India Offers Help
India expressed deep sadness and offered full relief assistance. Acting President Rodríguez thanked India, highlighting India’s strong global tradition of helping during natural disasters.

UPSC Value Box (Prelims Focus)
Focus vs Epicentre The Focus is the exact starting point of the quake underground. The Epicentre is the spot on the surface directly above it.
Moment Magnitude (Mw) Scientists use this instead of the old Richter scale because it accurately measures the total energy a quake releases, not just the wave size.
NDMA & NDRF India’s top disaster management body (chaired by the PM) and its specialized rescue force.
CDRI Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. Launched by India in 2019 to build global infrastructure that can survive disasters.
Operation Dost (2023) India’s famous earthquake rescue mission in Turkey and Syria, a great example of our disaster diplomacy.

MCQ Practice Question
Q. With reference to earthquakes and India’s disaster management framework, consider the following statements:

  1. A doublet earthquake refers to two seismic events of nearly equal magnitude occurring very close together in time and space.
  2. The Moment Magnitude Scale (Mw) measures only the amplitude of seismic waves, much like the older Richter scale.
  3. The Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) was launched by India at the United Nations Climate Action Summit in 2019.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
(a) 1 and 2 only    (b) 2 and 3 only    (c) 1 and 3 only    (d) 1, 2 and 3

Answer: (c) 1 and 3 only

  • Statement 1 is Correct: A doublet is exactly this—a rare pairing of two near-equal magnitude quakes in close time and space, just like in Venezuela.
  • Statement 2 is Incorrect (The Trap): The Richter scale measures wave amplitude. The Moment Magnitude Scale (Mw) measures the total energy released, making it much more accurate for large quakes.
  • Statement 3 is Correct: CDRI was indeed launched by PM Modi at the UN Climate Action Summit in New York in September 2019.
