  • He began his career as an educationist and served as the Principal of Ramkrishna Vidyapith, Ramkrishna Nagar.
  • He joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1950 and later became one of the founding leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam after its formation in 1980.
  • He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Silchar in 1991, 1998 and 2009.
  • During the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government, he served as the Union Minister of State for Communications (1998).
