| Relevance: GS-II Groupings & Agreements affecting India | Source: BRICS NSA huddle, June 2026 |
1 · What happened
|
India is the chair (president) of BRICS in 2026. As chair, it will host a meeting of the National Security Advisers (NSAs) of the BRICS countries in New Delhi on 22–23 June 2026. An NSA is a country’s top security official; for India it is Ajit Doval. This huddle prepares the ground for the big 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit, set for 12–13 September 2026 in New Delhi. It also comes just as a US–Iran interim accord is calming a weeks-long West Asia war — so security and energy are top of mind. |
2 · What is BRICS — and who is in it now?
| BRICS is a group of major emerging economies that work together as a voice for the Global South (the developing world). The name began as “BRIC” in 2001 (Brazil, Russia, India, China); South Africa joined later, adding the “S”. Lately it has expanded fast. |
- The founding five: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa.
- Joined January 2024: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE.
- Joined January 2025: Indonesia. (This makes 10 confirmed full members.)
- Invited but not yet joined: Saudi Arabia — it takes part in some meetings but has not formally taken up membership.
3 · The New Delhi moment
|
The huddle
Security chiefs meet
NSAs of all BRICS states gather to discuss global security. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi attends, alongside Russia and Iran.
|
On the side
India–China border talks
Wang Yi (China’s Special Representative on the boundary) meets Doval — a chance to ease long-standing border tensions.
|
|
The relief
Hormuz reopens
The US–Iran accord reopens the Strait of Hormuz — which carries about a fifth of the world’s traded oil — helping cool fuel prices.
|
The unfinished risk
Proxy fault-lines
Groups like Hezbollah and the Houthis, and the Lebanon front, are not part of the deal — so the peace stays fragile.
|
4 · Why it matters for India
- Strategic autonomy: hosting a BRICS security meeting (with Russia, China, Iran) while staying close to the West shows India’s multi-alignment — friends in every camp, tied to none.
- Energy security: an open Hormuz protects India’s oil supply, and sanctions relief lets India explore cheaper Iranian crude again.
- Bridge role: India can speak for the Global South in BRICS while acting as a possible mediator in regional conflicts.
