Meghalaya Cabinet has officially declared the Chocolate Mahseer (Neolissochilus hexagonolepis), as the State Fish of Meghalaya. 

• The decision aims to strengthen conservation efforts for the species and promote awareness about the protection of freshwater ecosystems.

The declaration comes at a time when river ecosystems across India are facing growing pressure from pollution, habitat loss, overfishing, and climate change.

About Chocolate Mahseer (Khasaw)

• The Chocolate Mahseer is a freshwater fish species native to the rivers and streams of Northeast India and parts of South Asia.
• It is locally known as Khasaw in Khasi and Na-rang in Garo language.
• Scientific name: Neolissochilus hexagonolepis
• It is mainly found in: Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh & Himalayan river systems
• The fish prefers: Fast-flowing, Clean & Oxygen-rich rivers and streams of the northeastern Himalayas.
