Why in the News?
The Meghalaya cabinet recently approves Khasi and Garo as official state languages.
About the Decision
- The government of Meghalaya has approved the Meghalaya Official Languages Ordinance, 2026.
- It declares Khasi and Garo as official languages of the state, along with English.
- The Cabinet repealed the Meghalaya State Language Act, 2005 and amended the relevant Acts, including the Meghalaya State Legislature (Continuance of English Language) Act, 1980.
- The move is aimed at strengthening the use of indigenous languages in governance and promoting the linguistic identity of indigenous tribal communities.
What are Official State Languages?
- Official languages are those used by a state government for administration, legislation, and official communication.
- States can choose their own official languages under Article 345 of the Constitution of India.
- They are different from the Eighth Schedule languages, which are recognized at the national level.
Key Features of the Move
- Khasi and Garo can now be used in:
- Government communications
- Administrative work
- Legislative debates (after legal amendments)
- Amendments will be made to the Meghalaya State Legislature (Continuance of English Language) Act, 1980.
- Strengthens the demand for inclusion of Khasi and Garo in the Eighth Schedule.
