Relevance: GS III (Environment & Biodiversity) | Source: Down To Earth
1. What is the News?
- The Report: The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) recently released its annual “State of India’s Environment 2026” report.
- The Core Message: The report paints a scary picture of our planet’s health, warning that we are pushing the Earth beyond its limits to recover.
2. Key Findings: Why Should We Worry?
- Breaching the ‘Safe Limits’: Scientists have identified 9 “Planetary Boundaries”—these are basically the safe operating limits for humanity (like safe levels of freshwater use or climate change).
- The Danger: The report warns that we have officially crossed 7 out of these 9 boundaries.
- Mass Extinction: Plants and animals are dying out much faster than natural rates. The report highlights that species are now going extinct at a rate 10 to 100 times higher than earlier estimates.
- SDG Impact: This rapid environmental destruction directly threatens our global goals, especially SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
The “UPSC Trap”
- The “Publisher” Trap: A common trick is stating that this report is published by the Ministry of Environment (MoEFCC) or the UN.
- The “Concept” Trap: Do not assume the UN created the ‘Planetary Boundaries’ concept. It was actually developed by a group of independent scientists at the Stockholm Resilience Centre.

With reference to environmental conservation and global frameworks, consider the following statements:
- The ‘Planetary Boundaries’ framework was officially introduced and adopted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
- The annual “State of India’s Environment” report is published by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).
- ‘Ocean acidification’ and ‘Stratospheric ozone depletion’ are among the nine identified planetary boundaries.
