1. Why in News?

Indian Railways has successfully installed Kavach 4.0 on the highly busy Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah routes.

2. What is Kavach 4.0?

• The Basic Concept: It is an Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. Think of it as a “digital safety guard” for trains.
• Automatic Braking: If a train driver (loco pilot) misses a red danger signal or drives too fast, Kavach automatically takes control and applies the brakes to stop a collision.
• How it Works: It uses RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags placed on the railway tracks and radio communication towers to track the exact location of trains.

The “UPSC Trap”

• The Origin Trap: Kavach is 100% made in India. It was developed by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). 
• The Tech Trap: It does not rely solely on GPS or satellites. It requires physical track-side infrastructure (like RFID tags on the sleepers) to function properly.
