About Bir Chilarai Divas

  • Bir Chilarai Divas is celebrated annually in Assam on the full moon night (Purnima) of the Magha month in the Hindu calendar, usually falling in February. 
  • It commemorates the birth anniversary of the legendary 16th-century Koch general, Chilarai. In 2026, it was observed on February 1st, 2026.

Who was Mahabir Chilarai?

  • Mahabir Chilarai, also known as Sukladhwaj Singha, was the great commander of the Koch dynasty and the younger brother of King Nara Narayan.
  • He earned the title “Chilarai” (meaning swift as a kite) due to his extraordinary speed, courage and military strategy on the battlefield.
  • He played a decisive role in expanding and consolidating the Koch kingdom during the 16th century.

Historical and cultural contributions

  • Chilarai was not only a military genius but also a patron of literature, culture and religion.
  • Along with King Nara Narayan, he was instrumental in the reconstruction of the Kamakhya Temple after its destruction by Kalapahar, the commander of the Sultan of Goud (Bengal).
  • His leadership symbolised resistance, cultural revival and political unity in medieval Assam.

  • The Chief Minister announced a ₹50 crore grant to preserve and develop the historic Koch Raja Howli in Darrang as a heritage site.
  • Newly constructed Chilarai Bhawans at Mangaldai and Golaghat were inaugurated.
