12th Foundation Day Celebration

In 2025, AWU observed its 12th Foundation Day, marking more than a decade of contribution to women’s education and empowerment in Assam and the wider Northeast region.

Establishment and Vision of AWU

The Assam Women’s University (AWU) is located in Jorhat and is the first women’s university in Assam.
The university was established in 2013 by the Government of Assam under the Assam Women’s University Act, 2013.
It was created with the vision of promoting higher education exclusively for women and empowering them through academic and professional opportunities.

Academic Programmes and Focus Areas

AWU offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, with a strong focus on research, skill development, and employability.

Leadership and Contributions

The first Vice-Chancellor of AWU was Dr. Malinee Goswami, a noted scholar of Assamese literature and an educationist, who laid the academic foundation of the university.
Over the years, the university has become a centre for nurturing women leaders in academics, entrepreneurship, culture, and social service.
