The Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs has launched the beta version of Adi Sanskriti, a digital platform envisioned as the world’s first digital university to preserve and promote the culture and knowledge of tribal communities.
Key Features of Adi Sanskriti
The platform is designed to serve as a comprehensive repository of tribal art, heritage, and knowledge systems and enable livelihoods by connecting tribal artisans with national and global markets.
It has three main components:
Adi Vishwavidyalaya (Digital Tribal Art Academy):
Currently offers 45 immersive courses on tribal dance, painting, crafts, music, and folklore.
Adi Sampada (Socio-Cultural Repository):
Hosts over 5,000 curated documents covering tribal paintings, clothing, artifacts, dance, and livelihoods.
Adi Haat (Digital Marketplace):
Linked with TRIFED, aimed at evolving into a dedicated online marketplace for tribal artisans, enabling direct consumer access.
Inputs and Collaborations
The platform is built through convergence with State Tribal Research Institutes (TRIs), which have contributed in documenting, curating, and mapping tribal artforms in the first phase.
In the first phase, TRIs from 15 states—Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and Goa—contributed.
The launch of Adi Sanskriti follows the Adi Vaani initiative, which provides a mobile app and website for translations into and from Adivasi languages such as Gondi, Bhili, Santali, and Mundari, with more languages to be added.
Significance
The platform provides diversified knowledge about tribal culture (Sanskriti) and heritage (Virasat).
It will serve as both an educational hub and a livelihood enabler, empowering tribal artisans while safeguarding cultural traditions in the digital age.
