AASHVAST Labs: Shielding Indian Army Drones from Hidden Cyber Traps

The News: The Indian Army has launched the first of six ‘AASHVAST’ laboratories in New Delhi. These high-tech labs will strictly inspect the internal software of all military drones to detect hidden Chinese parts and secret hacking codes. This ensures our critical defense drones cannot be hijacked or disabled by enemies during a war.

1. How the AASHVAST System Works

Previously, the Army only did physical outer checks on drones. AASHVAST goes much deeper by scanning the drone’s digital brain.

  • Catching Fake Labels: Sometimes, suppliers illegally buy cheap Chinese parts and stick a “Made in India” label on them. AASHVAST scans the actual silicon microchips to reveal exactly where they were made, ignoring fake bills.
  • Deep Software Scans: It thoroughly checks the embedded software (called firmware) that tells the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) how to fly, hunting for hidden traps.
  • Air-Gapped Security: To keep top-secret data safe, all testing is done in an “air-gapped” room. This means the testing computers are completely unplugged from the internet, making it impossible for hackers to steal data during the test.

2. The Hidden Threats It Detects

The software suite can detect up to 14 different types of deadly cyber traps planted during manufacturing.

  • Location and Time Bugs: It finds hidden codes that make a drone fly perfectly normally every day, but then deliberately crash the moment it crosses a specific strategic border.
  • Secret Backdoors: It detects hidden passwords that would allow an enemy to secretly take remote control of the drone or watch its live camera feed.
  • Kill Switches: The system identifies hidden “mission termination” codes designed to randomly shut down a drone’s engine before it can drop a payload or reach its target.

Value Box: Key Security & Tech Concepts
Technological Sovereignty True self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat). It ensures that our domestic drone assembly does not secretly rely on compromised foreign microchips that could betray us in a war.
Army Design Bureau (ADB) The main agency leading the Indian Army’s push for homegrown technology. It is actively working to eliminate risky Chinese-origin parts from our military hardware.
Supply Chain Vulnerability The severe danger that enemies can secretly plant viruses into physical hardware parts while they are being manufactured abroad, waiting to activate them remotely during a conflict.
Hardware Trojans Unlike normal software viruses, these are physical, malicious changes made directly inside the microchips. They are virtually impossible to detect with just your eyes.

Practice MCQ

Q. Consider the following statements regarding cybersecurity and defense technology:

  1. An “air-gapped” computer network is one that is physically isolated and completely disconnected from the internet and other unsecured networks.
  2. Hardware Trojans are malicious software programs that only infect a computer’s operating system after a user downloads a malicious file.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

(a) 1 only     (b) 2 only     (c) Both 1 and 2     (d) Neither 1 nor 2

Answer: (a) 1 only
Hint: Statement 1 is correct; air-gapping is a vital security measure for highly sensitive data. Statement 2 is incorrect because Hardware Trojans are not downloadable software programs; they are physical, malicious modifications made directly into the integrated circuits (microchips) during the manufacturing process.
