The Context: The 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai. They solved a massive problem in medicine: how to force chemical reactions to make only the safe, desired version of a drug. They did this by mastering the way molecules mirror each other, much like our left and right hands.

1. The Mirror Image Problem

To understand this discovery, we have to look at the shape of molecules.

  • Chirality (Handedness): Look at your left and right hands. They are exact mirror images, but you cannot stack them perfectly on top of each other. Many chemical molecules act the exact same way—they exist in two mirror-image shapes called enantiomers.
  • Nature is Picky: For some reason, biology is incredibly biased. The proteins inside our bodies are made entirely of “left-handed” building blocks, and our DNA uses only “right-handed” sugars. Nature almost never mixes the two.

2. Why Does Handedness Matter for Drugs?

When chemists traditionally mix chemicals to create a drug in a lab, the reaction naturally produces a messy 50-50 mix of both left-handed and right-handed molecules. This can be deadly.

  • The Tragic Example: In the 1960s, a drug called Thalidomide was given to pregnant women. The “right-handed” version of the drug safely cured morning sickness. However, the “left-handed” version in the same pill caused catastrophic birth defects.
  • The Nobel Solution: The Nobel winners figured out how to heavily bias a chemical reaction so it produces only the safe, desired mirror image (a process called Asymmetric Synthesis). They even found a way for a molecule to coach the surrounding chemicals to copy its exact handedness (Autocatalysis).

PLI Scheme & APIs To remain a global superpower in generic medicines, India relies heavily on these Nobel-winning techniques. It allows India to manufacture raw drug ingredients (APIs) safely and cheaply, supporting the government’s PLI scheme by reducing our dependence on imported chemicals.
CDSCO The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation. This is India’s top drug regulator. To prevent deadly side effects, modern CDSCO rules demand that drug manufacturers produce perfectly pure, single-handed molecules.
CSIR & NIPER India’s premier scientific institutes that use these advanced chemical blueprints to invent indigenous, world-class medicines under the National Biopharma Mission.

Practice MCQ

Q. Consider the following statements regarding ‘Chirality’ and organic chemistry:

  1. Chiral molecules are chemical structures that exist in two non-superimposable mirror-image forms, known as enantiomers.
  2. Human DNA and proteins naturally utilize a balanced 50-50 mixture of both left-handed and right-handed molecules to function properly.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

(a) 1 only     (b) 2 only     (c) Both 1 and 2     (d) Neither 1 nor 2

Answer: (a) 1 only
Hint: Statement 1 is correct; this is the exact definition of molecular chirality. Statement 2 is completely incorrect because biological systems exhibit “homochirality”—meaning nature is extremely biased. For example, human DNA almost exclusively uses right-handed sugars, and our proteins use left-handed amino acids.
