The News: Tech giants are rushing to build massive AI data centers across India. However, local communities are protesting because these giant computer farms guzzle millions of litres of water daily while operating with almost no environmental rules.

1. Why Does AI Need So Much Water?

AI computers are not like normal hard drives. They process so much data so fast that they run incredibly hot.

  • Power Hungry: A standard computer server rack uses about 5 to 15 units of power. A modern AI rack needs up to 100 units to function.
  • Cooling the Heat: To stop the servers from melting, they use water to cool them down. A single large AI center can drink up to 2 million litres of water every day—enough to supply 15,000 citizens.
  • Wrong Locations: Companies are building these facilities in places like Vizag and Thane, which already suffer from severe water shortages, angering locals.

2. The Missing Rulebook

  • No Strict Checks: Shockingly, the government doesn’t force data centers to pass a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The law only checks the pollution from their backup generators, completely ignoring their massive water use.
  • A Bad Deal: Locals argue that these tech giants get huge tax benefits and drain local resources, but end up creating very few actual jobs for the community.
