Tony Koyu, inventor of Tani Lipi, has been selected for the Luminous Lummer Dai Literary Award 2026 for his outstanding contribution to literature and language preservation in Arunachal Pradesh.

What is Tani Lipi?

• Tani Lipi is the first and only indigenous script developed for the Tani tribes of Arunachal Pradesh.
• It was spearheaded and developed by Tony Koyu, a noted writer, linguist and cultural activist.
• The script was created to provide a common writing system for several Tani language groups, including Galo, Adi, Nyishi, Apatani, Tagin and Mishing communities.
• The term “Tani” refers to a group of ethnically and culturally related tribes tracing their ancestry to the legendary ancestor Abo Tani.
• Tani Lipi is a left-to-right alphabetic script — written in the same direction as English
• It consists of 26 specially designed letters which have sounds that standard scripts like Devanagari or Latin cannot accurately represent. 
• The script is not derived from or related to any existing writing system, though some letters visually resemble Bengali or Latin letters.

Steps Taken to Promote Tani Lipi

• It is digitally enabled — Tani Lipi works on computers and smartphones; a dedicated Tani Lipi typing app is available on the Google Play Store (launched December 2023). 
• The script was first presented publicly at a seminar at the North Eastern Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), Naharlagun in November 2001 
• It was subsequently introduced in the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 2007.
• Echo of Arunachal, the state’s first newspaper, promoted and published content in Tani Lipi for four years — giving the script early mainstream visibility and legitimacy.
• The tele-film “The Last Hope”, which explains Tani Lipi and its significance, has been telecasting on Doordarshan Kendra (DDK) and North East TV since 2005.

Objectives of Tani Lipi

• The script aims to preserve indigenous languages, oral traditions, folklore and cultural identity.
• It seeks to reduce dependence on external scripts and strengthen linguistic self-reliance.
• It promotes the documentation of tribal literature, history and traditional knowledge for future generations.

About Tony Koyu 

• He is an indigenous social scientist from Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh who created Tani Lipi in 2000 after years of deep research into the phonetic structure of Tani languages.
• He has authored more than five books, including novels and philosophical texts in the Galo language and the Adi language using Tani Lipi, as well as a novel in Hindi.
• He is the Founding Vice-President of the Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society (APLS), the body that has now honoured him with the Luminous Lummer Dai Literary Award 2026.
• Awards received: Bharat Jyoti Award, Sanskar Bharati Award, Penguin Publication Award, and felicitation by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister for contributions to Tani language and culture.
• He has also founded the Tony Koyu Foundation Pvt. Ltd, a not-for-profit entity dedicated to systematically digitising and promoting Tani Lipi across schools, universities, and government institutions.

Luminous Lummer Dai Literary Award

• It is regarded as the only state-level literary award in Arunachal Pradesh.
• The award is named after Lummer Dai, one of Arunachal Pradesh’s most celebrated literary figures and pioneers of modern literature in the state.
