Why in the news?

The North Eastern Region Agri-Commodity E-Connect (NE-RACE) portal has received a positive response from farmers, sellers, Farmer Producer Companies, Self Help Groups and buyers, signalling growing acceptance of digital market linkages for agricultural and horticultural produce from the Northeast.

What is NE-RACE?

  • NE-RACE is a digital platform designed to connect farmers and producers of the Northeast directly with buyers across India.
  • It aims to reduce middlemen, ensure better price discovery and help farmers unlock the region’s organic and niche market potential.
  • The portal also provides logistics guidance, multilingual helpdesk support, field-level assistance and state coordinators to resolve operational challenges.

Key achievements so far

  • 6,807 sellers/farmers/Farmer Producer Companies onboarded.
  • 735 buyers registered from within and outside the region.
  • 1,797 agri-commodities listed, including horticulture, spices and value-added products.
  • ₹9 crore worth of sales facilitated so far – modest, but with strong growth potential.

These numbers reflect an encouraging early trend, especially for a region historically constrained by geography and market access.

Why the Northeast has a natural advantage

  • Traditional farming practices in the region are largely organic and chemical-free, driven by low fertiliser and pesticide use.
  • Many products already carry or are eligible for Geographical Indication tags, which enhance market value and consumer trust.
  • The central government plans to identify 150 products from the region for Geographical Indication tagging in the next two years, which can significantly boost demand on digital platforms.

Digital enablers strengthening NE-RACE

  • Rapid expansion of mobile connectivity, including border villages, has reduced the digital divide.
  • Farmers without smartphones can still access services through:
    • Farmer Producer Organisations
    • Krishi Sakhis
    • Common Service Centres
  • Agri Stack registration enables farmers to access multiple digital services and schemes.
  • Integration with the Bhashini platform allows applications to function in local languages, improving inclusion.

Role of Artificial Intelligence in farmer support

  • Farmers in the region are benefiting from Kisan e-Mitra, an Artificial Intelligence-powered chatbot.
  • It assists farmers on schemes such as Prime Minister Kisan Samman Nidhi, Prime Minister Fasal Bima Yojana and Kisan Credit Card.
  • The system supports 11 languages, is voice-enabled, and handles around 8,000 farmer queries daily, making it highly relevant in a linguistically diverse region like the Northeast.

Key challenges that limit scale

  • Production scale remains insufficient to meet rising and repeat demand from digital buyers.
  • Assured availability is crucial, as modern buyers expect consistency and fast delivery.
  • Organic certification is a major bottleneck due to limited laboratories and certification agencies.
  • Quality packaging and clear labelling are essential to build buyer confidence in virtual markets.
  • Rain-fed agriculture dominates the region, making production vulnerable to climate variability.

Climate resilience and infrastructure: the missing links

  • Climate change has led to erratic rainfall, causing floods during excess rain and water stress during sowing periods.
  • Affordable assured irrigation must be prioritised to sustainably scale production.
  • Being an ecologically fragile region, adoption of climate-resilient farming practices is essential.
  • All-weather road and railway connectivity is critical for seamless logistics and timely deliveries.

Way forward

  • States must actively integrate farmers and sellers with NE-RACE using existing digital and institutional support.
  • Awareness on certification, food safety standards and digital compliance needs to be expanded.
  • A holistic approach combining digital markets, irrigation, infrastructure and capacity building is vital for long-term success.

One-line wrap

NE-RACE shows how digital markets can transform Northeast agriculture, provided production, certification and infrastructure challenges are addressed together.

Exam Hook

Key Takeaways

  • NE-RACE links Northeast farmers directly with national markets.
  • Digital tools alone are insufficient without production scale and irrigation.
  • Geographical Indication tags and local language platforms enhance market trust.

Mains Question

Discuss how digital market platforms like NE-RACE can transform agricultural marketing in the Northeast, and analyse the challenges that limit their full potential.
