A statue of Birangana Sati Sadhani was unveiled at Bogidoul Haluwa Bhakat Gaon, Sivasagar, using the Chief Minister’s One Time Relief Fund (2023–24).
- The event was inaugurated by Education and Sivasagar district guardian minister Dr Ranoj Pegu, along with the inauguration of a commemorative arch.
Who was Sati Sadhani?
- Sati Sadhani was the last queen of the Chutia Dynasty, remembered for her courage and sacrifice.
- She was the daughter of King Dharmadhwajpal of the Chutia kingdom.
- Married to Nityapal (Nitai) in 1512, she later assumed power due to his weak leadership.
- She was crowned Queen in 1522, during a period of political instability.
Historical significance
- In 1524, the Ahom kingdom under Suhungmung attacked and conquered Sadiya, the Chutia capital.
- Queen Sati Sadhani retreated to the Chandragiri hills with her husband and a small force and resisted the Ahom invasion.
- She chose death over dishonour, refusing to marry Sadiyakhowa Gohain, the Ahom governor of Sadiya.
- She sacrificed her life by jumping from the Chandragiri hills in 1524.
In Honour of Sati Sadhani
- The Government of Assam built a Kalakhetra dedicated to Birangana Sadhani in the year of 2009.
- It is situated in Selengi Gaon, Golaghat district.
Sati Sadhani Diva is observed every year on April 21 in Assam to commemorate her martyrdom, courage, and spirit of freedom.
- The Sati Sadhani Award is conferred on individuals for outstanding contributions to art, culture, and literature.
