Why in the News?
Around 250 members of the Bnei Menashe community from Northeast India recently migrated to Israel under a relocation programme, reviving debates on identity, migration and history.
Who are the Bnei Menashe?
- Bnei Menashe means “Children of Manasseh”
- They belong to Kuki-Mizo-Chin tribal groups in Manipur and Mizoram
- Population: around 7,000–10,000 people
- They claim descent from one of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel
The Historical Claim: Lost Tribes of Israel
- Around 722 BCE, the Assyrian Empire conquered northern Israel
- Ten tribes, including Manasseh, were exiled and disappeared from records
- These became known as the “Ten Lost Tribes”
- Bnei Menashe believe their ancestors migrated through:
- Persia (Iran)
- Afghanistan and Tibet
- Eventually settling in Northeast India
How Identity Evolved Over Time
- Initially followed indigenous tribal beliefs (figure called Manasia)
- With British-era missionaries, many converted to Christianity
- In 1951, a leader named Challianthanga had a vision linking them to Israel
- From the 1970s onwards, a Judaising movement emerged
- Israeli organisations like Amishav guided them towards Judaism
Religious Practices and Recognition
- They follow Orthodox Jewish practices:
- Observing Sabbath
- Wearing traditional Jewish attire
- Performing rituals like mikveh (ritual bath)
- In 2005, Israel’s religious authority recognised them as “Lost Seed of Israel”
- However, they must undergo formal religious conversion to gain citizenship
Migration to Israel: A New Chapter
- Migration supported by Israeli programmes like Operation Wings of Dawn
- Around 4,000 have already migrated since the 1990s
- Nearly 6,000 more expected to relocate
- Support includes:
- Housing, education and job assistance
- Language training and integration
