Why in the News?

Around 250 members of the Bnei Menashe community from Northeast India recently migrated to Israel under a relocation programme, reviving debates on identity, migration and history.

Who are the Bnei Menashe?

  • Bnei Menashe means “Children of Manasseh”
  • They belong to Kuki-Mizo-Chin tribal groups in Manipur and Mizoram
  • Population: around 7,000–10,000 people
  • They claim descent from one of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel

The Historical Claim: Lost Tribes of Israel

  • Around 722 BCE, the Assyrian Empire conquered northern Israel
  • Ten tribes, including Manasseh, were exiled and disappeared from records
  • These became known as the “Ten Lost Tribes”
  • Bnei Menashe believe their ancestors migrated through:
    • Persia (Iran)
    • Afghanistan and Tibet
    • Eventually settling in Northeast India

How Identity Evolved Over Time

  • Initially followed indigenous tribal beliefs (figure called Manasia)
  • With British-era missionaries, many converted to Christianity
  • In 1951, a leader named Challianthanga had a vision linking them to Israel
  • From the 1970s onwards, a Judaising movement emerged
  • Israeli organisations like Amishav guided them towards Judaism

Religious Practices and Recognition

  • They follow Orthodox Jewish practices:
    • Observing Sabbath
    • Wearing traditional Jewish attire
    • Performing rituals like mikveh (ritual bath)
  • In 2005, Israel’s religious authority recognised them as “Lost Seed of Israel”
  • However, they must undergo formal religious conversion to gain citizenship

Migration to Israel: A New Chapter

  • Migration supported by Israeli programmes like Operation Wings of Dawn
  • Around 4,000 have already migrated since the 1990s
  • Nearly 6,000 more expected to relocate
  • Support includes:
    • Housing, education and job assistance
    • Language training and integration

Key Issues and Debates

  • Scientific ambiguity: DNA evidence of Jewish ancestry is inconclusive
  • Identity vs Evidence: Strong oral traditions vs lack of written proof
  • Social challenges: Reports of racial discrimination in Israel
  • Migration concerns: Loss of young population from Northeast India

Important Terms Explained

  • Ten Lost Tribes: Ancient Israelite tribes exiled and lost in history
