1. What is the News?
The ongoing tension between the US, Israel, and Iran has reached a highly dangerous level. There are three massive threats right now:
- The Sea Route: Iran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz (a crucial route for oil ships).
- The US Threat: The US has warned Iran: “Open the sea route, or we will completely destroy Kharg Island” (Iran’s main oil hub).
- Iran’s Counter-Threat: Angered by constant attacks, Iran is threatening to leave the NPT (the global treaty that stops countries from making nuclear bombs).
2. Geography Check
UPSC loves asking about locations in the news. Memorize these two places:
- Strait of Hormuz: A very narrow sea passage that connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. It is the most important “chokepoint” in the world because 20% of the world’s daily oil passes through here.
- Kharg Island: An island located in the Persian Gulf. It is the heart of Iran’s economy because almost all of its crude oil is exported from here.
3. What is the NPT?
- The Concept: The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) is a global agreement. Its goal is simple: stop the spread of nuclear weapons and promote peaceful nuclear energy.
- The “India Fact”: India is NOT a member of the NPT. India has always refused to sign it because it considers the treaty unfair (it allows a few powerful countries to keep their nuclear bombs but bans everyone else). Pakistan and Israel haven’t signed it either.
- The Danger: If Iran actually leaves the NPT, it means they might start building nuclear bombs. This would cause massive panic and a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.
4. Why is India Worried?
If a full war breaks out here, the Indian common man will suffer directly:
- Expensive Petrol (Inflation): India buys over 80% of its oil from other countries, and most of those ships pass through the Strait of Hormuz. If this route is blocked, global oil prices will explode, making petrol, transport, and daily groceries very expensive in India.
- Safety of Indians: Lakhs of Indian citizens live and work in the Gulf countries. A war puts their lives at risk and stops the money (remittances) they send back home to their families.
- Chabahar Port Risk: India has spent thousands of crores building the Chabahar Port in Iran (to bypass Pakistan for trade). US bomb strikes in Iran could destroy this highly strategic Indian investment.
The “UPSC Trap”
- The “India Signed” Trap: UPSC will try to trick you by saying, “India is a founding member who signed the NPT.” Incorrect. India has firmly refused to ever sign it.
