1. What is the News?

  • The United States has started a formal investigation into India’s steel and electronics manufacturing sectors.
  • The Allegation: The US suspects the use of “forced labour” in the supply chains of these Indian industries.

2. What is ‘Section 301’?

  • The Law: It is a powerful domestic law under the US Trade Act of 1974.
  • The Power: It gives the US President the power to punish foreign countries (by imposing heavy import taxes or trade bans) if they believe a country is using “unfair” trade practices.

3. Why it Matters to India?

  • The US is one of the biggest buyers of Indian goods.
  • If the US imposes heavy penalties, Indian products will become too expensive there. This will hurt our exports, factory jobs, and flagship schemes like Make in India and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI).

The “UPSC Trap”

  • The “WTO” Trap: Section 301 is a unilateral (one-sided) domestic US law. Many countries actually argue that the US using Section 301 violates global WTO rules, because the US acts as its own judge instead of going through the official WTO courts.
