The United States has announced a proposed $10 billion arms sale to Taiwan, pending approval by the U.S. Congress. It is the largest U.S. weapons package for Taiwan so far.
The deal includes High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, long-range tactical missiles, self-propelled howitzers, drones, and radar systems, aimed at strengthening Taiwan’s deterrence and rapid-response capability.
China’s Reaction
China strongly opposed the move, stating it violates the One-China policy, interferes in China’s internal affairs, and threatens stability in the Taiwan Strait. Beijing warned of adverse effects on U.S.–China relations.
Geopolitical Significance
The deal highlights rising U.S.–China strategic rivalry in the Indo-Pacific. Taiwan remains a key geopolitical flashpoint, raising concerns over regional militarisation and escalation risks.
