About Swahid Smarak Khetra
- The Swahid Smarak Khetra (Martyrs’ Column) is a landmark memorial built to honour the martyrs of the Assam Agitation (1979–1985).
- The Assam movement, a mass movement led by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad (AAGSP), rooted in demands for sovereignty and the protection of indigenous rights that ended with the signing of the Assam Accord.
Key Features of the Memorial
- Built on 98+ bighas of land at Boragaon, Guwahati.
- Foundation stone laid in 2019 as part of implementing the Assam Accord.
- Includes: Water bodies, landscaped zones, Prayer hall, Cycle track, Auditorium, Sound-and-light show depicting Assam Agitation & Assam’s history
- It is also designed to be a public learning space and cultural landmark.
- The project aims to ensure that the historical memory of the martyrs remains alive for future generations, allowing citizens to reflect on the sacrifices made in defence of Assam’s cultural identity.
