The Assam Chief Minister reviewed the final preparations for the inauguration of Swahid Smarak Khetra at Boragaon, scheduled on December 10 (Swahid Divas).

  • Swahid Divas is observed every year on December 10 in Assam to honour the martyrs of the Assam Agitation (1979–1985). 
  • The day commemorates the death anniversary of Khargeswar Talukdar, the first martyr of the Assam Movement. 
  • He was killed on 10 December 1979 during a protest, making this date symbolic for the entire agitation.
  • The day honours the martyrs of the Assam Agitation (1979–1985) — against illegal immigration and for the protection of Assamese identity.

About Swahid Smarak Khetra

  • The Swahid Smarak Khetra (Martyrs’ Column) is a landmark memorial built to honour the martyrs of the Assam Agitation (1979–1985). 
    • The Assam movement, a mass movement led by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad (AAGSP), rooted in demands for sovereignty and the protection of indigenous rights that ended with the signing of the Assam Accord.

Key Features of the Memorial

  • Built on 98+ bighas of land at Boragaon, Guwahati.
  • Foundation stone laid in 2019 as part of implementing the Assam Accord.
  • Includes: Water bodies, landscaped zones, Prayer hall, Cycle track, Auditorium, Sound-and-light show depicting Assam Agitation & Assam’s history
  • It is also designed to be a public learning space and cultural landmark.
  • The project aims to ensure that the historical memory of the martyrs remains alive for future generations, allowing citizens to reflect on the sacrifices made in defence of Assam’s cultural identity.
