Why in the News?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Silchar on 14 March 2026 to lay the foundation stone of the Shillong–Silchar Greenfield High-Speed Corridor, a major highway project aimed at improving connectivity across Assam, Meghalaya and the wider Northeast region.
About the Shillong–Silchar Greenfield Corridor
- The Shillong–Silchar Greenfield High-Speed Corridor is a 166.8 kilometre long highway project connecting Mawlyngkhung near Shillong in Meghalaya to Panchgram near Silchar in Assam.
- The project is implemented by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, an agency working under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
- The total estimated capital cost is about ₹22,864 crore.
- The corridor will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Model, a public-private partnership framework where the government and private developers share project costs and risks.

Project structure
- The highway has been divided into four construction packages.
- Around 144.8 kilometres falls in Meghalaya, while 22 kilometres lies in Assam.
- One 31 kilometre from Mawlyngkhung to Panchgram has an estimated cost of ₹2,206.55 crore.
Objectives of the Corridor
- To reduce travel time and transportation costs between Shillong, Guwahati and Silchar.
- To decongest the existing National Highway 6, which currently faces heavy traffic and bottlenecks.
- To improve regional connectivity across Northeast India, especially linking Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura.
- To support the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision by promoting economic growth, logistics efficiency and employment generation.
Strategic and Economic Significance
- The corridor will integrate with major highways such as National Highway 27, National Highway 106, National Highway 206 and National Highway 37.
- It will improve access to towns such as Diengpasoh, Khlieriat, Ratacherra, Kalain and Umkiang.
- Silchar acts as a gateway to southern Northeast states, making this corridor vital for trade, transport and defence logistics.
The project is expected to boost tourism, trade and mobility across the region, strengthening the government’s focus on infrastructure-led development in the Northeast.
