- It commemorates the birth anniversary of the legendary 16th-century Koch general, Chilarai. In 2026, it was observed on February 1st, 2026.
Who was Mahabir Chilarai?
- Mahabir Chilarai, also known as Sukladhwaj Singha, was the great commander of the Koch dynasty and the younger brother of King Nara Narayan.
- He earned the title “Chilarai” (meaning swift as a kite) due to his extraordinary speed, courage and military strategy on the battlefield.
- He played a decisive role in expanding and consolidating the Koch kingdom during the 16th century.
Historical and cultural contributions
- Chilarai was not only a military genius but also a patron of literature, culture and religion.
- Along with King Nara Narayan, he was instrumental in the reconstruction of the Kamakhya Temple after its destruction by Kalapahar, the commander of the Sultan of Goud (Bengal).
- His leadership symbolised resistance, cultural revival and political unity in medieval Assam.
