Early Life and Ideological Formation
Golap Borbora was born in 1925 in Golaghat, Assam, into a family connected with the freedom struggle.
His great-grandfather was associated with the Revolt of 1857, while his father participated in anti-colonial labour movements.
He studied in Tinsukia and later at Calcutta University, where he came into contact with socialist leaders like Ram Manohar Lohia and Jayaprakash Narayan.
These influences shaped his lifelong commitment to socialism, equality, and democratic values.
Role in Freedom Struggle and Socialist Movement
- Participated in the Quit India Movement and was jailed.
- Joined the Socialist Party, advocating decentralised economic power and workers’ rights.
- Became General Secretary of the Samyukta Socialist Party (1965).
Trade Union Activism
Actively worked for labour rights and trade union movements.
Led struggles like:
- Doyang Satyagraha (land rights for the landless)
- Refinery Movement
- 1974 Railway Strike
He believed that organised labour and farmers must unite to resist exploitation.
Political Career and Leadership
- Became the first opposition leader from Assam in Rajya Sabha (1968–74).
- In 1978, he became the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Assam, leading the Janata Party government.

- Strongly opposed authoritarianism during the Emergency in India 1975 and was jailed for 18 months in Tihar Jail.
