The Dhubri–Phulbari Bridge over the Brahmaputra is one of Assam’s most ambitious infrastructure projects and is being closely monitored through PAIMANA, a web-based platform of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

Launched in September 2025, PAIMANA tracks central sector infrastructure projects worth ₹150 crore and above, ensuring transparency and timely execution.

Key project details

  • Length: 19.28 kilometres (to be India’s longest river bridge)
  • Cost: Around ₹4,997 crore
  • Progress: 67.5 per cent completed (as of December 2025)
  • Construction start: December 2020
  • Target completion: September 2028
  • Implementing agency: National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited
  • Construction partner: Larsen & Toubro
  • Funding agency: Japan International Cooperation Agency

Design and alignment

  • A four-lane bridge forming a critical part of National Highway 127B.
  • Connects Dhubri (Assam) with Phulbari (Meghalaya).

Comprises:

  • 12.62 kilometres of extradosed cable-stayed navigable spans,
  • 5.73 kilometres of viaducts,
  • 0.92 kilometres of approach roads.

Acts as the missing link between Assam and western–central Meghalaya, close to the Bangladesh border.

Significance of the bridge

  • It will serve over two million commuters, providing the shortest and fastest road link between western Meghalaya and the rest of India.
  • Expected to boost trade, mobility and access to services in Assam and Meghalaya.
  • Holds strategic importance by strengthening connectivity to international trade corridors involving Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh.
  • Enhances India’s broader Act East and neighbourhood connectivity objectives.

Governance and monitoring

Inclusion under PAIMANA reflects the government’s push for data-driven infrastructure monitoring, focusing on time, cost and outcome efficiency.

Regular monitoring helps reduce delays in mega projects critical for the Northeast.
