Syllabus: GS –III & V: Infrastructure, Regional Development
Why in the News?
The Vice President recently highlighted the significant improvement in connectivity and economic development in Northeast India over the past decade, noting that expanded railways, highways, and air networks have strengthened the region’s integration with the rest of India.
Improved Connectivity in Northeast India
Historically, the Northeast region faced geographical isolation due to mountainous terrain, dense forests, and international borders. In recent years, major infrastructure initiatives have significantly improved connectivity.
- Railway expansion: Since 2014, over 1,800 km of new railway lines have been constructed in the region.
- Several capitals such as Agartala and Itanagar are now connected with the national railway network.
- Strategic railway projects like the Jiribam–Imphal and Dimapur–Kohima lines are under construction to further improve accessibility.
- The Bairabi–Sairang railway project will connect Aizawl with the national railway network.
- Improved national highways, bridges, and regional airports have strengthened transportation and trade links across the eight Northeastern states.
These developments have enhanced economic circulation, trade, tourism, and mobility across the region.
Northeast’s Connectivity Leap
- Budgetary allocation for the Northeast has more than tripled in the past decade, crossing ₹1 lakh crore in 2024–25.
- The region now plays a key role in India’s Act East Policy (2014), which aims to strengthen connectivity, trade, cultural exchanges, and strategic engagement with Southeast Asia.
Tourism Development in the Northeast
Improved infrastructure has also boosted tourism.
- The Maa Tripurasundari Temple in Tripura, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, has witnessed a rise in visitors from 3.5 lakh to around 8.5 lakh annually.
- The ₹450 crore Matabari Tourism Circuit project aims to further enhance tourism infrastructure.
- Development of Tripura’s Chabimura rock carvings and Narkel Kunj near Dumboor Lake is expected to promote eco-tourism and generate local employment.
- Improved highway connectivity to Kaziranga National Park has enhanced tourist access to the NP. In recent seasons, the park has seen over 35% growth in tourist footfall.
- Infrastructure improvements and better connectivity in Guwahati have increased pilgrim tourism to the Kamakhya Temple.
Key Policy Frameworks Supporting Development
- North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (2017): Provides full central funding for connectivity and social infrastructure.
- PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan: Integrated planning for multi-modal infrastructure.
- Regional Connectivity Scheme – UDAN: Expands affordable air connectivity to remote airports.
- PM-DevINE (2022): Focuses on infrastructure and social development projects in the Northeast.
- BharatNet: Expands digital connectivity to remote villages.
Strategic Connectivity Projects
- India–Myanmar–Thailand Trilateral Highway linking India with Southeast Asia.
- Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, connecting Kolkata to Mizoram through Myanmar’s Sittwe Port via sea, river, and road.
These projects reduce dependence on the Siliguri Corridor and strengthen the region’s economic integration.
One-Line Summary
Improved infrastructure, connectivity projects, and targeted development schemes are transforming Northeast India into a strategic gateway for trade, tourism, and regional integration.
