China has unveiled the world’s largest thorium-fuelled molten salt reactor (TMSR) designed to power a cargo ship capable of carrying nearly 14,000 containers.
This next-generation nuclear propulsion system eliminates dependence on fossil fuels, operates without water cooling, and functions at low pressure and high efficiency, making it smaller, quieter, and safer than conventional uranium-based reactors.

Understanding the Technology

Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (TMSR): A thorium-based reactor uses thorium-232 as fuel instead of uranium. In a molten salt system, the fuel and coolant are mixed or the molten salt carries the fuel, enabling high-temperature, low-pressure operation.

  • Fuel Breeding: Thorium-232 absorbs neutrons and converts into fissile Uranium-233, allowing the reactor to regenerate its own fuel.
