Why in the News?
Rongjali Bwisagu was recently celebrated with enthusiasm in Kokrajhar district.
About the Festival
- Rongjali Bwisagu is the most important festival of the Bodo community of Assam.
- Celebrated during mid-April (Bohag/Baisakh), marking the Bodo New Year and arrival of spring.
- It is similar in spirit to other spring festivals like Bihu.
Key Features
- Traditionally celebrated for seven days, though earlier it continued for the entire month of Bohag.
- Divided into two main parts:
Mwsou Thukhwinai (Cattle rites):
- Observed on the last day of Chait month.
- Involves ritual bathing and worship of cattle (similar to Goru Bihu), highlighting agrarian roots.
Mansini Bwisagu (Human celebration):
- Begins on the first day of Bohag.
- Mansi Bwisagu seven days celebration are divided in different parts, such as:
- First day is Mansini Bwisagu (Similar to Manhu bihu),
- Second day is called Swimani Bwisagu (dog’s Bwisagu),
- Third day is called Omani Bwisagu (swine’s Bwisagu)
- Fourth day is called Daoni Bwisagu (Fowl’s Bwisagu),
- Fifth day is called Hangswni Bwisagu (Duck’s Bwisagu),
- Sixth and seventh days are for receiving relatives and friends.
Cultural Elements
- Celebrated with a rich tradition of music, dance, and rituals.
- Use of traditional instruments: Kham (drum), Siphung (flute), Jotha (cymbal) and Thorkha (bamboo instrument)
- Reflects harmony with nature and animals.
